Have friends come from afar! In September, Cummins Europe’s largest production and R&D base, the Darlington plant and technology center in the UK, welcomed a group of guests from afar. They were made up of Foton Daimler dealers, customers and Chinese commercial vehicle media. Visit to the delegation.
As one of Cummins’ most important customers in China, Foton Daimler attaches great importance to the all-round cooperation with Cummins. It is hoped that through this visit, domestic distributors and customer representatives can deeply feel the history of Cummins Power and its The perfect blend of modern production and research and development capabilities.
The Cummins Darlington plant was founded in 1963 with an investment of £8.5 million. The engine was produced in 1965. The plant has approximately 1,150 employees and an annual production capacity of 80,000 engines. The product line ranges from 3.9L 75hp to 8.9L 400hp, including the popular B-Series and L-Series engine platforms worldwide.
From Euro III to Euro VI, the engine produced at the Darlington plant is both a pioneer in the upgrading of emissions technology and a practitioner of global R&D applications. At present, it has more than 200 OEM customers in more than 40 countries. While applying to the Chinese market, it also helps Chinese OEMs to continuously achieve breakthroughs in the export market. Taking the B4.5L engine as an example, in the process of development, this product is assembled in the UK, China, and the United States, and designed to meet the needs of global users, ensuring that product performance meets and exceeds the power of end users everywhere. The demand for economy, safety and comfort has become an epoch-making product that draws on the essence of a century of technology.
During the visit, what surprised the Chinese audience was that China’s National Sixth Standard Engine is also being tested and developed here. According to Cummins engineers, China National R&D is the core of Cummins’ “Global Six” project. Cummins’ global R&D resources are tilted towards this project, including the European R&D Center in Darlington. At the same time, the company’s rich experience in R&D and application has laid a solid foundation for the development of the National Sixth Project. While fully mobilizing global R&D resources, Cummins has been working closely with domestic commercial vehicle companies since the beginning of the development of the National Sixth, and is guided by the needs of users. Through the integrated integration, the perfect match between the National Six engines and the entire vehicle is achieved, while reducing emissions. Further improve power, reduce fuel consumption, and achieve simultaneous upgrades in product emissions and power performance, environmental performance, and engine efficiency.
At present, there are more than 200 skilled and experienced engineers in the Cummings Darlington Center and all over Europe. They work closely with the mainframe factory to test and diagnose road and non-road engines. The products cover 2.8-15L. Through professional testing and real-life emission experiments, the most suitable power configuration for the entire vehicle is matched.
Innovation is inexhaustible and customers are achieved. Cummins global technology research and development has always focused on two themes: First, vigorously promote new development, develop new technologies and new products; Second, continuously improve research and development efficiency, reduce development cycle and development costs. Cummins’ technical engineers have an in-depth understanding of the customer’s product application environment and understand the customer’s needs to discover, analyze, and develop technologies and products that meet the user’s actual requirements.
In addition, Cummins enables the sharing of technology platforms among engineering and technical departments across the country by establishing an efficient and globally unified R&D process, leveraging the advantages of complementary businesses and effectively improving R&D efficiency. Now, through the cooperation of 17 R&D centers around the world, Cummins has achieved 24-hour uninterrupted R&D experiments, which effectively guarantees the efficient promotion of core projects. At the same time, Cummins technologists use advanced computer-aided analysis tools to design and develop new products to achieve the strategic goal of “improving research and development efficiency, reducing development cycle and development costs”.
While leveraging global resources, Cummins’ R&D capabilities in key markets around the world ensure that companies can develop the right technology for each and every region. Cummins values local development, and Cummins technology research and development aims to “the most suitable technology is the key.”
Looking back over the history of Cummins in China for more than 40 years, the history of technology development can be divided into two major stages. The first stage is to bring the world’s most successful and mature products to China, including the early machine import and later joint venture production; the second stage is supported by global resources, and cooperate with the host manufacturers to understand the needs of Chinese users. , chain research and development, chain manufacturing, chain marketing, chain services, and partners to develop products and technologies suitable for the needs of the Chinese market. The Cummins East Asia R&D Center in Wuhan is a key part of Cummins’ global technology chain and the result of Cummins’ localization of technology in China.
At present, Cummins Darlington R&D Center and Wuhan East Asia R&D Center are working closely together to carry out joint research and development from Guosi to Guoliu, and gather strengths to create low-emission and high-performance products. In the face of domestic and global markets, Cummins and China’s OEMs are proactively planning power, making user demand an important guide at the beginning of product design, and ensuring the best optimization and matching of power and vehicle through R&D cooperation.
